GUN DEATHS BY INTENT, 2019
In 2019, 133 Wyomingites died by gun violence, an average of more than two people every week. Suicides were 86% of the gun deaths and homicides were 12%.
TRENDS OVER TIME
The total gun death rate in Wyoming increased annually, with few exceptions, over the course of the decade (2010-2019), due primarily to the rise in suicides. The total gun death rate increased 42% from 2010 to 2019 and the firearm suicide rate increased 38%. In 2019, the total gun death rate reached its highest rate since 1982. The firearm suicide rate reached its highest rate on record, according to CDC data.
Age-adjusted rate per 100,000
Note: The CDC considers firearm homicide rates based on fewer than 20 deaths “statistically unreliable.” There were fewer than 20 firearm homicides reported from 2010-2019, therefore these data points are omitted from the graph above.
