GOVERNOR RALPH NORTHAM ANNOUNCES GRANT FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY VIOLENCE INTERVENTION PROGRAMS

This morning, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced that $2.6 million in grant funding for community violence intervention programs is included in the 2020 budget. Governor Northam also announced that two new positions will be created at the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) to oversee these grants.

Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence State Director Lori Haas issued the following statement:

“We would like to thank Governor Northam and Secretary Moran for committing funding to community violence intervention programs. Too often, the communities that are most impacted by gun violence — frequently communities of color — are overlooked or ignored in the gun violence prevention debate.

“Addressing gun violence in these communities is vitally important. We hope that this funding and the new infrastructure is the beginning of a sustained commitment to support strategies and programs that have been proven to save lives.  We look forward to working with DCJS and the administration to grow this program and make it successful.”
