Ed Fund Submits Testimony For High Risk Protective Order Legislation

Carson City, NV (May 12, 2017)  — This morning, the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence submitted testimony to the Nevada Assembly Judiciary Committee in support of SB 387, which creates an order of protection against high risk individuals. The High Risk Protective Order (HRPO) would prohibit  persons from possessing or purchasing firearms when a court finds that they are at substantial risk of harming themselves or others.

An excerpt of Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence Public Health Analyst Vicka Chaplin’s submitted testimony is below:

“As a public health analyst, I amalgamate research evidence regarding indicators of dangerousness, the risk of violence towards self or others, access to guns, and gun deaths. Using the best available research, my colleagues and I work to determine who is likely to be at the highest risk of perpetrating violent acts and develop policies that reach and prohibit them from purchasing and possessing firearms for the duration of elevated risk. We also know that families and law enforcement desperately need legal tools to intervene and prevent tragedies when they are concerned about an at-risk individual. Laws like the High Risk Protection Order can save lives.”

SB 387 passed the Senate (12-9) and if passed by the House Assembly, it will go to the governor’s desk for his signature. The full testimony can be read here.
